Kauai
Kauai, "The Garden Isle," is the oldest of the Hawaiian Islands. Kaui is a beautiful, tropical island that offers many opportunities for outdoor adventures. Kauai is home to Waimea Canyon, the largest canyon in the Pacific. Additional Kauai attractions include Mount Wai'ale'ale (the wettest spot on Earth), Alaka'i Swamp (the world's largest high-elevation bog) in Kokee State Park and the Na Pali Coast (rugged 2000 ft. cliffs traversing 5 valleys).
When planning activities for your Kauai vacation, consider the travel time around the island. The Kuhio highway (highways 56 and 50) runs Kauai’s perimeter. So, it can take about two and a half hours to drive from Hanalei (near the Na Pali Coast trail head) to Kokee State Park. Kauai is one of our favorite islands. It is a great island to visit if you are interested in camping, hiking, backpacking and kayaking. There are good places to camp, snorkeling opportunities, numerous hiking trails, and unique backpacking and kayaking adventures. For some Kauai activities, you will need to plan far in advance. Camping along the Na Pali Coast for backpacking and kayaking trips is a very popular and it is almost impossible to get the required permits less than one year in advance. |
